Monica N. Betancourt has experience across several legal fields, including academia, litigation, public interest law, and corporate transactional law. She has represented clients in matters of mergers and acquisitions, commercial real estate development, commercial real estate financing, employment, intellectual property, private financing, strategic partnership agreements, corporate restructuring, insurance, and general corporate matters.

Prior to joining Alvarez & Diaz-Silveira, Monica served as in-house counsel for companies in the real estate and technology industries and as an associate in a Florida boutique litigation firm. Prior to that she was a Lecturer in Law at Tumaini University in Iringa, Tanzania, where she created and taught an L.L.M. in Internet Communications Law, focusing on privacy and data protection, freedom of information, and international jurisdictional issues. She also was an International Human Rights Fellow at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, where she co-authored a research paper which was presented to the Australian Parliament.

Monica received her B.A. in Comparative Literature and Society from Columbia University in 2006, where she was a Kluge Scholar, and her J.D. from the University of Chicago in 2011, where she received the Donald E. Egan Scholar Award for Integrity. She is admitted to practice law in the State of Florida and the State of Illinois. Monica speaks Spanish and French.
